HOSTING
HANDBOOK
Thank you for volunteering to host on our website. We hope the
following hosting guidelines will assist you in your hosting
experience.

1.        FOLLOWING THE GUIDELINES:  All hosts should follow the
following scoring rules for the sake of continuity.  If you wish to
use different rules, you must announce them at the beginning of
your game. Hosts may vary the ‘abbreviations’ and ‘last name
only’ rules, (as long as they announce the rule change at the
beginning of the game) but points earned in games using rules
differing in any other way will not count toward monthly point
totals.

2.        NAMES:  Full name or last name only is acceptable, while
first name only is not.
Exceptions can be made in cases where a person is commonly
(and generally recognized) by first name only, as is the case
with 'Elvis', 'Madonna' and 'Cher'. Well-known nicknames are
also acceptable, such as ‘The King,’ (Elvis) and ‘The Governator’
(Arnold Schwarzenegger.) For kings, queens and other rulers,
name and regnal number and/or name and surname/sobriquet
are acceptable (e.g. Alexander the Great or Elizabeth II).

3.        ABBREVIATONS: Abbreviations are not allowed.
Exceptions to this rule are the abbreviations ‘St.’ for saint and
‘Dr.’ for doctor and ‘Mt.’ for mountain, U.S.S.R., U.S.A., Aus., Oz, U.
K. , FBI, WWI, WWII and R.C.M.P., which are all acceptable
abbreviations.  A host may deviate from the above-mentioned
rules regarding abbreviation only by announcing beforehand
that specific exceptions will be made (e.g. ‘For this question, I
will accept abbreviations.’)

4.        SPELLING:  As long as words are phonetically correct,
they will be accepted.

5.        PRETYPES:   Pretypes (An answer typed and entered in
anticipation of and before a question) are not worth any points.

6.        GOOGLING:  Googling an answer during the game is not
allowed. We do encourage players to do further research on
questions after the game, however.

7.        PARTS OF THE ANSWER WITHIN QUESTIONS:  If part of the
answer is in the question, such as ‘On what mountain did Noah’
s ark come to rest?’, players do not need to repeat the word
‘mountain’ in the answer.  The word ‘Ararat’ will suffice. Note
that  a category posted before the question is NOT part of the
question.

8.        BATTLE OF THE SEXES:  Players must choose which
gender they are at the beginning of the game and remain that
gender for the rest of the game.

9.        SCORING: For intermediate trivia games, when there are
one to four players, one point is given to the first answer. When
there are 5 to 9 players, one point is given to the first two
answers. When there are 10 - 14 players, one point is given to
the first three answers, and so forth. For 10:00 regular trivia,
when there are fewer than ten players, the first three answers
are awarded points on a gradated scale of 3, 2, and 1. When
there are at least fifteen players but less than twenty, the first
four answers are awarded points on a gradated scale of 4, 3, 2
and 1. When there are 20 or more players, the first five answers
are awarded points on a gradated scaled of 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1.
(See SCORING AFTER HINTS)

10.        SCORING AFTER HINTS:   If the host has found it
necessary to give a hint, the gradated points drop to 2-1-1-1-1.
Give the starting letter and a hint that requires some thought,
such as, ‘Begins with M, reacts with water.’ (Magnesium)
‘Rhymes with’ and spelling out the word letter by letter are give-
away hints and should be avoided. Hosts who don’t wish to use
this method may announce so at the beginning of the game.

11.        EXCESS VERBIAGE:  Keep your questions easy to read
and free of obfuscation and extravagant verbiage.

12.        DATES:  Avoid dates.  Very few people remember exact
dates.

13.        NUMBER QUESTIONS: Avoid number questions unless
you are prepared for chaos. You might consider limiting players
to 1 or 2 guesses each. This could also apply to other questions
where the answers come fast and furious, such as with U.S.
states and U.S. presidents, etc.

14.        OBSCURE QUESTIONS: Obscure questions tend to bring
complaints.  Tuck hints within the questions themselves to
make them easier.

15.        LAG:  If a player asks what order his or her answer came
in, please oblige him or her.  If the lag is bad and numerous
players are complaining, copy and paste the order of the
answers from your screen onto the main screen after each
question. (This can only be done if you have the latest version of
Java.)

16.        PROMPTNESS:  Promptness is appreciated.

17.        FONT:  Please use a bold red font to give questions.

18.        INTERNATIONAL QUIZZES:  Saturday and Sunday quizzes
should be global in perspective. Typical subjects would be world
history, mythology, disease, the human body, animals, art,
foreign words and phrases, explorers, ethnic foods, science,
insects, inventors, classic literature, mathematics, world
leaders, world religions, world money and finance, and
Shakespeare. Don’t assume the entire world knows American
pop culture or American sports.

19.        HOSTING POINTS:  Guest hosts will receive 50 points
toward their monthly point totals for composing and hosting a
quiz.

20.        SCOREKEEPERS:  Scorekeeping volunteers will receive
20 points per game toward their monthly point totals.

HOSTS ARE THE ULTIMATE JUDGES:  The host is the ultimate
judge.
